Hard at Work

Today we started our new topic in Maths: Proportions and Ratios.
What do these terms mean?
When would I use this in the real world?
How do I keep things in the right proportions?

See if your kids can answer these questions and check their understanding.

I am making a super duper yummy punch.
The perfect recipe has 2 Cups 7-Up and 3 Cups juice.
But I am having a party and I want 20 cups of punch in total.
How much of each drink do I need?
Lots of great discussion, thinking and collaborating was happening...and maybe a touch of silliness!

We've been active!

Well it has been a very busy start to Term 4.
What a fabulous day we had on Friday for our Athletics Day!  Well done Room 5, it was great to see many of you perform to the best of your ability. Sorry, I don't have many photos from this day but from the smiles on their faces, you can tell they had a great time.

Swimming started today and I am sure everyone was exhausted after the session, I was tired just watching them swim.  Groups have now been sorted and the real work now begins.

We all grow at different rates!

We started our new health topic this term that involves looking at how we change as we grow older.  The class really appreciated discussing some ground rules for discussions and how to make sure everyone feels like they can contribute in a positive manner.  We had a great first session looking at the most adorable photos of each other and trying to guess who was who.  Some have you really tricked us and some of you have you could not hide as your face is so similar to now.
We also looked at the different ways in which we have changed over the years including eye colour, hair colour or texture, and size.

Most importantly is that we all know that we grow at our own pace and we are perfect in the eyes of God just the way we are.

Information Webs

Students have been reading lots of non-fiction text over the term which has linked in well with our Science investigations.  In reading, they have also been learning to create information webs to help show their understanding of the information presented.  In addition, students have tried using Lucid Charts to make their info webs.  Well done Room 5 for learning how to use another ICT tool all on your own and for helping others get started as well, you are brilliant!

A bit of this and that

Well Week 3 is done and dusted and it was quite an interesting week indeed.  We started the week with 12 students away!  It was nice to see most of the students back today but we are still not 100%. Please see today's newsletter about sickness and keeping kids at home if they are unwell, as Room 5 has been hit quite hard.  In saying that we wish everyone a speedy recovery.

A snippet of what's been going on in Room5.

Thinking about our theme this year of Choose Kind.

Maori Language week involved a variety of cool activities including: Mihi writing, fantastic artwork, myths and legend readings and Marae protocol.

Well done to everyone who has presented their book reports as well.

Keep up the great work Room 5, your are all so wonderful!

WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to my lovely Room 5!  Although I love a holiday, especially when I get to return home to Canada, it is always nice to back to school and seeeveryone again.
I do hope everyone is feeling refreshed and ready to roll out another Term.

Hopefully you received the school email from Mrs. Earl.  Areas worth highlighting:

1.  Thank you to the PTA- New Toilets
Wonderful News - our toilets have finally been refurbished. Thank you so much to the PTA who raised the bulk of the money for this last year.
2.  Next week is Maori Language week. We are celebrating this by having a focus on Te Reo and Tikanga Maori for the next two weeks. Children will also be learning about Marae Protocol, myths and legends and also be participating in some visual art activities.3.  Science- The last 8 weeks of term will have a science focus and we will tell you more about this as the time gets closer.4.  Welcome to all the new staff starting this Term.

And of course, we want to remember and show our understanding of the importance of CHOOSING KIND at all times.  We had a lovely assembly on Monday and students have been discussing and thinking about what they can do on a day to day basis to be KIND.  More to come soon about what we have been working on in class.

Lastly thank you to all students who have been sharing their "Book in a ....."  book reports in class.  It is so great to hear about all the wonderful books that you are reading.

Month in a flash!

Well apologies for Friday Flashbacks taking such a back seat.  Where does the time go?  A whole month since our last post.  Yikes.
The good news is that the students are posting on their own personal blogs much more regularly and adding reflections to their learning journey.  Please do go visit their blogs and leave comments for them as well.  You are the audience after all and they appreciate the visit into their learning!

So what has Room 5 been doing for the past few weeks?

Pretty much the same as normal with a bit of that and a bit of this....

In RE being the month of May (for the most part anyway) we have been learning all about Mary. Students have created lessons in groups and are starting to present them to the class.  And some lovely Mary art as well.

In Maths, students have been presenting their Data Detective investigations while also working on our Add/Sub Unit.

On wet days we keep sane and active with some fun and games and a bit of dance!

Our class was also very busy sorting out all of the wonderful clothing that was donated by our awesome community for St.Vincent de Paul.  Thanks so very much.

Correcting our weekly homework quiz is always a hit.  What great research skills they are showing.  Well done.

Keep your eye out for the upcoming posts that will be created by our weekly student Bloggers.

Now let's get ready for production!  So exciting!

Cross Country Run Day

This is just a very short clip that shows how some students were feeling before the race.
Please see student's individual blogs for their news report on how they felt about the race once it was finished.
Well done to everyone for giving it a go and showing excellent effort and determination.

Anzac Poem

A great poem written by Saskia.  Well done.

Anzac Poem

The soldiers heart was a loud base drum
Their breath was cold and their hands were numb

BANG BANG BANG my acquaintance is dead
I’ve never felt such an uncomfortable bed

The time has come to go to war
Because we know what we’re fighting for

I have a trench I had to dig
It makes me feel like i’m a pig

Now I have experienced the attack
I have a sore neck and I hurt my back

The men who sadly went and gave way
Will be remembered till this very day

Anzac Day Ceremony

poppy1.jpg (154×168)We will remember.

What a lovely Anzac ceremony we had on Friday morning.
We started the week settling back into a new Term, setting goals, and reviewing expectations in all areas of learning.
We ended the week with a busy Friday, including clubs, assembly, but most importantly our Anzac Ceremony.

Fortnight Flashback and Happy Easter

Well the last two weeks were busy to say the least.  So here is a little recap of what was happening in Room 5.
1.  We started our ANZAC Unit and I was very impressed with the amount of interest and enthusiasm that students showed in regards to this topic.  Thank you to the students who have shared family items and stories about their ancestors who had a part to play in the war.  Students will continue to inquire, study and learn about ANZAC at the start of Term 2.  Stay tuned for postings on their blogs.

2.  Our poetry unit has also begun to take shape.  Some students have shown a real talent when it comes to writing poetic couplets and and other forms of poetry.  We will continue to develop our skills, making sure to use rich vocabulary and different types of figurative language.

3.  Our last session with the Canterbury RAMS players took place on Wednesday and we now look forward to the start of winter sport in Term 2.

4.  Besides that we did lots of fun things relating to Easter.  Have a look...

Flashback Friday

Week 7 was very much a "normal" week of learning, so not too much to report in terms of highlights.

Monday-we completed an e-AsTTLe maths assessment (not a highlight for students, I'm sure!)
Tuesday- we had another great RAMS basketball training session
Friday- we all took part in a lovely school mass

One new thing to report is that we have started our poetry unit and students have been working hard on creating some very cool Diamante Poems this week.  Most students managed to post one of their poems to their blog, so please go and have a look and leave a comment as well.  Students are known to try their best when they know they have a captive audience!

Try writing another diamante poem using this helpful website and video!

Have a great weekend everybody

Caritas Raffle

Caritas Lenten Calendar

Thank you for your donations to Caritas during Lent.  We have so much to be grateful for, here in New Zealand, so let's choose kind and help others in need.

The class raffle will be drawn in the last week of school, so keeping looking for that bit of spare change or dig deep and bring in your week's pocket money!
Thanks Room 5, you are wonderful.
